Grants: What to Expect

Think you know everything about applying for University of Oklahoma grants? Think again. Here are a few things to keep in mind when applying for research and travel grants through the University of Oklahoma.

  1. The Process. The way the funding process works at the University of Oklahoma is you start by applying for a grant. You then eagerly await the email that says, “Congratulations! You’ve been approved for XX amount of money.” Once you receive this email, then you collect all of your receipts and turn them into the department office. The department assistants then follow the university travel policy (or the policies related to research grants). If your receipts are approved by the university you then receive the amount they approve you for.
  2. The amount you are approved for may not be the amount you get. Once you go through the process detailed above the university’s travel office may not approve the total amount of funding the funding grantor has, which causes some confusion for applicants. Funding grants are among the most audited sources of funding at the university. Due to this, the financial office is very strict on adhering to state and university funding protocols. When they review your travel budget and receipts they scrutinize the validity of the request and make sure it aligns with funding protocols (i.e. you’re flying coach, not first class). Difference may arise from their review and the original funding grantor’s review because of this.
  3. Know the facts. Visit the link above and know what is and is not eligible for funding reimbursement. For example, you will only receive reimbursement for travel up to 24-hours before and 24-hours after a conference/event for domestic travel and up to 48-hours before and 48-hours after a conference/event for international travel.
